Total Noob Segmenting Question -- Bowl diameter?
Sep 15th, 2016 at 6:44am

New turner here…likely over my head, but I'm not one to dip my toes into the water.  Cannonball or go home!

I think I'm on board with how to cut the segments and such but I have a question.  How do I determine the size of the bowl I want to cut.  I'm sure it has everything to do with the "wide" side of each segment but is there a formula to figure out what size I make each cut in order to make say a 10" or 8" bowl?

Thanks in advance for your help.  I've tried searching but must be using some terrible search terms.  Any input is welcomed.

You determine the vessel size, ring/layer thickness and all design elements.  Its all in your hands to create something that makes people say "WOW! You made this? and How did you do that?"  Us woodturners will first look at the shape.  So starting out or after a bunch keep the shape simple and pleasing.

For cutting your segments the BEST solution is the wedgie sled, free plans for it over at Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register you can use his wedgies or not.  A good digital protractor work well.  To do 12 segment rings all you need is a 30/60/90 triangle.  Rings are dead on no sanding.  I'm in the process of doing 48 segment rings and the only I do is to remove the fuzzies.

This may be true for some people, if you are referring to "standard" brick-lay segments.
I know this is your opinion but i would like to be clear for those who aren't experienced with cutting segments.
There is much more to segmenting than what a "wedgie sled" can do.

Thanks for the input guys.  I'm bartering with a fellow now to build my wedgie sled.  In the interim, I've purchased a Miter-Set to help the process along.  Now if Amazon would just get my table saw here!!!
