Hello from SoCal

Hello All,

Just picked up my first lathe, albeit cheap. A Central Machinery 10x18. It's been a long interest of mines, and I'm glad I finally took the plunge. After my first session, I was hooked.

For now my interest lies in Dip pens, and misc. things for outdoor gear. I would like to move up to cups, bowls, vases, etc. in the future when I can afford a better lathe.

Thanks Tony!

I've already got a bunch of cool ideas I want to try, now to find a good wood supplier locally.

Look for a building in progress. Pick up some scrap 2X material.  Great for practice

Welcome Gary.

Wood suppliers are all over the place, just listen for the sound of chainsaws or look up Tree Service companies for your local area.

With your size lathe, small trees or relatively good size branches can be good practice material - who knows, some of it might turn out to be a keeper.

Have fun with your new "toy". They do become addictive.

Turn safe and remember, it's just wood and wood grows on trees.

I've got a few random bits of scrap. But the prowling near buildings under progress is a good idea. I bet they waste so much material that couldn't have otherwise been used.

That's a great idea, my neighbor just had service done on his tree in the backyard. Not sure what it was, but it would have been cool. I was at work when it happened though.

Speaking of which, I found this random piece of wood many years ago. Not sure what it is, but I cut off a sample today and found some lovely spalting. Although the big cracks are off putting, I'm wondering if they could be saved by sealing with fiberglass resin or epoxy.
