Candle Stick Finishing
Sep 21st, 2016 at 10:37am

Hey everyone

I just finished some candle sticks I turned made from laminated 2x6's...

I would like to paint some and I would like to stain some...

I would like to actually put candles on them - and I was just curious what you would use as a final finish for them...

For the painted one? Is there any finish you can put on?  Same with the stained?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Good thing is that eventually, they will all have a nice wax finish on them!! Smiley

What are your concerns about the finish?
A candlestick may get wax dripped on it but other than that it shouldn't be subjected to much abuse. IMO any finish will work, just follow the instruction.

I made candle holders for Christmas gifts last year. They were turned from maple and finished with "Old Village" enamel, and art store acrylic for the bands. I washed them with a mahogany stain and finished with a matte clear spray.

Laminated construction lumber tends strongly towards blotchy staining that gets better with pre-treating with a sealer like acrylic varnish or shellac.

Using a faux grain finish usually looks better to me.

Mulit coated milk paint of different colors can be striking with sanding to simulate wear through layers followed by an oil or varnish final coat.

So many opportunities......
