Dust Collector Noise Reduction
Oct 14th, 2016 at 4:13pm

I have  small shop in my basement where I have a dust collector that I need to reduce the noise level. I cannot move it outside the shop so I need to reduce the noise level where it is located. Sine the shop is small, I would like to do so without building a closet.
Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about wrapping parts of the machine with foam?
I would appreciate any feedback.

Most shop-vac type dust collectors are noisy and there isn't much you can do about that except buying a quieter one.

Sorry Sad

High volume fans are noisy.  It is a trade off with noise being the price of moving sanding dust to a good filter.

I cannot think of how to effectively use foam to cut many decibles.  w

To reduce the noise level, you need to surround the motor, not wrap it.
The noise (pressure wave) needs to move through the air and be diffused/absorbed by the foam (egg-crate works the best for sound deadening}.
Wrapping foam tightly won't do  much to lower the noise level and can have negative side effects like overheating the motor.

In my opinion the answer is not to wear proper ear protection.

It may take some getting used to but soon it will be second nature.
I just upgraded my dust collection in my small shop and have had to do that.  The benefit of the better dust control out weights the inconvenience wearing the muffs.

I think you meant to say "is to wear" proper hearing protection.

I agree with Len, i wear mine anytime I'm using a power tool and it just becomes a habit very quickly.
If the noise bothers others, you may still need the foam.

My dust collector is located in my garage and I've fed the hose to my small shop behind the garage using one of these. Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Even with this setup, I still need to use a pair of ear muffs while turning because the sound from the suction end of the hose is quite loud to my ears.

I did put mine (Oneida 3 hp.) in a closet, which cuts down noise some, but even with the door open, not enough noise to require hearing protection. Some dust collectors make more noise than others. If you are using a shop vac, they are really loud. With the dust collectors, the motors don't make all the noise, the fan and air moving through the duct work also makes a lot.

Regarding Shop Vacs--- I purchased a "muffler"--rather a difuser for mine. Stock Item at Sears, and it actually helps a lot.

I do not use my ShopVac as a dust collector. My unit is a 2HP Craftex bag type unit with a canister filter on top.
Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it.

I have found my dust collector does make noise, however the higher pitched and closer to my ear noise from my electric drill is more concerning.

Listen (sorry for the pun) to the advice here and wear hearing protection when using the dust collector and when using the electric drill.   Thumbs Up
