Music Box
Nov 1st, 2016 at 5:09pm

A friend gave me a small piece of highly figured walnut and asked if I would make a music box for him as a gift to his wife. There was not enough wood to make the body from one piece, so I assembled eight staved sections before turning. I had just enough wood left for the lid. The bottom was turned from another piece of walnut, not as highly figured, but not that visible either.

It has a 30 note movement that plays "Greensleeves" (a Tudor period tune). The lid carving is a Tudor rose.

The box is about 4.5" dia. x 4" high.

I drew the original pattern on vellum then transferred it to the lid using carbon paper (which was barely visible). I went over the tracing with a fine Sharpie and incised the pattern with a narrow (30 deg.) V chisel. The lathe chuck makes a great holder for carving.

Where did you find or source out round music box movements for lathe turned boxes? Seems like I did this many years ago. Looks like a good way for small bits of wood. Maybe some others also might know. Thanks

I don't believe the actual movement is round, just mounted in a round box.
Some of the smaller units (18 notes or so) are just about square with rounded corners and if needed fit quite snugly in a round opening.
Or you can by a premade one Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register
Which is a movement like I described in a round plastic housing.

Thanks for the reply Ed, I have done some more sourcing of these little boxes and you have a lot of choices of movements with the little square boxes. Looks like the church key can go on the bottom, or even the side. I have some scraps and can make them stave construction like Eric did on his beautiful little box. George Troy

I like making music box enclosures, they always seem to go over well and make people smile.

You can also decide whether the music plays when the enclosure is opened or closed.
There are too many configurations to list.

A great source for movements is musicboxattic.com. I use the 18 note movements and, occasionally (like the walnut box shown) a 30 note movement.  There's a big price difference but the quality is worth it. Music Box Attic is always having 15-20% off sales.

I make my own shutoff mechanism, which is pretty simple. I can link or e-mail a guide showing how I make music boxes if anyone is interested.

Ed I admire your craftsmanship with the music boxes. To make things easier for me I will be using electronic music boxes to put inside. Raise the lid and the motion light will be activated.
I have one almost completed, with 14 more to go on this run. My boxes will all be made with staves and scrap wood. You are the one that set me off on these, who knows what it will lead to. Thanks George Troy
