Welcome to the group from SE Texas!
The chuck I started with not that long ago was s PSI (Penn State Ind). Reasonably priced and has nice assortment of jaws. It held everything I put in it, no failures.

Everyday liberating nice things from ordinary chunks of wood---and I like gnarly wood, the outcome is nearly always better than the start.
