I found it worked better than their round base.

Mike, I like spokeshaves and have a boat load of those I have made, purchased, restored, collected, etc. Very basic shaping tool with lots of different styles.

The Veritas concave shave is essentially a design from a chair maker named Brian Boggs. It is optimized for round spindles (think ladderback chairs, windsor chairs, shaker ware).

Round sole shaves come in different radius and excel a working coves, but with care/skill can substitute for a flat sole.

Flat sole shaves are the turners skew of the spokeshaves. all kinds of shapes and sizes.

The only one I find really difficult to sharpen is the Miller Falls Cigar shave.

Lee Valley has the kit to let one turn custom handles.

And no, I do not want to sell my Brian Boggs shave

Want to make your own, Ron Hock sells excellent blades in different sizes and I have instructions from many years ago for basic wood shave.

The only thing that comes to mind right away is a worn down (too short) plane blade.
You'll most likely have to do some type of machining to adapt it to it;s new usage, what ever that is.

High carbon steel is the traditional common blade material. In the old wood bodied shaves, the smith drew out the ends and finally bent them a t a right angle to the blade ends.

More recent wood shaves use O1 steel and have threaded rods in the ends (see Ron Hock's web pages).

Built a couple years ago out of rectangular high speed tool steel grinding to shape. Took a long time, but it was a good blade in an old Preston shave body.

hey Mike - although it might fly against conventional wisdom ( I too make Native American flutes) I once visited Sante Fe, New Mexico , and visited with a flute maker making his wares in the middle of an outdoor mall - he hand made his flutes - no power tools involved - conventional thinking would be that he hand carved , or use some kind of hand plane , or spokeshave , instead his tool of choice for shaping the outside in a fairly rapid fashion was a farrier's rasp , it was amazing how quickly he could shape the outside of the flute in short order...and with precision
