Bugs...
Dec 3rd, 2016 at 11:20am

Hi,

I just slabbed and created a mess of bowl blanks. Unfortunately realizing half of the wood has powder post beetle holes. Pin size... not a lot but some of the little buggers crawling around. I am concerned because I work in my house.

Did a lot of web research and seem like no good solutions. I don't have a kiln and the pieces are big. Is Boracare a possible solution? I have concerns about turning and sawing after applying.

Bummed... the wood is really nice.

Thanks in advance!
Ken

freezing for 72 hours will usually do it. If you use DNA to cure your wood that will also fix em.

I am going to try it with heat I think. Freezing is not an option for me. Hoping to make a 6 foot hot box out of sheathing with a propane heater.

After doing a ton of research it seems like a crapshoot.

Thanks for your input.

When we get frames in with those holes, i squirt a healthy dose of alcohol or unseal into the holes. Nothing lives in that stuff.

Most times the bugs are gone but better safe than sorry.

Make every effort to find and kill all of those wandering around as it can become an infestation in your shop. Shocked

That would be an option because I have never heard my wife talking about having to deal with that critter.
