Finish on Acrylic pens?
Feb 2nd, 2017 at 1:40pm

I'm new to pen turning. From what i've read, I don't put a finish on acrylic. So what sanding/polishing steps should I take to get nice glossy finish?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Wet sand up to 600 or higher, then use Novus polish. Start with Novus 3, which is the coarsest of the line, then 2, then 1. 1 is basically no grit at all. It sprays on and helps the pen to not show finger prints and it removes static.

I gave up on wet sanding when I didn't see a difference between wet and dry sanding.  I sand through 600 then switch to Micro Mesh through 12,000.  Then I put 1-2 coats of Hut Ultra Gloss on it for the final shine.

I wet sand with Micromesh.  The water protects the Micromesh. I don't always go to the highest grit, but buff with white diamond and wax on a wheel.

Glenn, as you can see there are many methods of finishing acrylic. Everything from traditional wood finishing products to automotive finishes to specialized acrylic polishes.

My advice is, don't over think it.
Sand until you're satisfied and then buff if you can.

First, I thank you all for the feed back. I knew my question was open ended and would get many different responses, which is what I wanted. What I get from this is that if I sand to high grit (wet &/ or dry) then polish and apply Ren wax, I should be content.

Again, thank you for steering me down the road.
