CA Finish on a Dyed Bowl
Mar 5th, 2017 at 4:35pm

A few days ago I posted on FB an ion progress photo of three dyed pieces that I was working on.  One of my friends asked if I would create a video of my CA finishing process.  So, I thought I would give it a try.  I have posted the picture of the three turnings and also a picture of the one piece once I finished putting on the CA.  This is a piece of quilted maple that I dyed black, sanded back and then dyed red. It has a CA finish on it. I will be putting a gold leaf finish on the inside of the bowl. The bowl measures 10"W x 2 1/2"H. I was asked by one of my FB friends to post a video of how I do the CA finish. So, if interested you can find it on Youtube at Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register.  Thanks for looking

Don, glad you liked it and were able to learn a thing or two.  It's always good to see how someone else "skins the cat."

I have a question.
The final product, if you will, looks great. A very deep high gloss finish was achieved.
My question is why did you choose to use CA.? I don't/won't dye wood so maybe there's something in that I don't understand. I suppose I would have gone for a lacquer to get the same/similar results.
Just curious.

Ed,
I have tried spraying lacquer and am not very good at it.  I either get it too heavy and uneven or too thin and orange peel like.  The other thing is CA will hold up better to buffing than does lacquer.  So, I go with what I'm "good" at Grin
