How do I get rid of the black chuck marks in a recess?
Mar 12th, 2017 at 12:40pm

I normally use tenons so I never worry about the marks from the chuck.

Today I used a recess and the chuck jaws left black (oxidation?) marks on the Cherry offset bowl I turned.

I remember hearing/seeing someone show how to get rid of these marks using a relatively simple method. Any thoughts?

Concentrated lemon juice from the plastic lemon bottles. If the bowl is fresh off the lathe and green, gone in seconds. If it sat around for a week or so, maybe two or three applications and an hour or half day. You can also use a nitrile glove to stretch over the jaws, but the lemon juice is easier.

Interesting question, (if I understand it correctly0
I have never had to do this but that's because I never use the mounting mortise or tenon as my final product, I always finish cut and sand the mounting area.
I may have to start a thread about mounting practices.

Ed- Great Idea and the topic of my April demo at our club.  However.... I will be focusing on vacuum chucking and even if your DON'T have a the vacuum part, the chuck and a "soft touch" on your tailstock may do ... Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Citric acid (lemon juice) will dissolve iron but Oxalic acid is the gold standard for removing heavy iron staining.  I have a blend of oxalic and citric (both dry powders) that the company where I worked before retiring sold to hard wood flooring companies to remove iron stain.
