I think I would give up doing bowls and concentrate on lidded boxes with the following 5 tools;

thin parting tool
3/8 inch Thompson detail gouge
1/2 inch Thompson spindle gouge
Hollowing tool from Allen wrench
3/4-inch skew

This leaves a couple essential tools off the list and, obviously, provides no way to chuck or center the piece. I'm not sure I could do it.

This is an interesting exercise and makes one think.
