If you could only have five turning tools
Mar 13th, 2017 at 8:12am

We woodturners like collecting tools and for some of us we beleive that the next great tool will make us a better turner. Honestly, I'm afraid to count how many I have.

QOTW: Lets assume that we need to downsize and can only have 5 tools (besides the lathe) what would your choices be?

While I'm  not in the collect as many "special" tools as you can club.
Here's my list.
1/8" parting tool
1" Skew
3/8" spindle/detail gouge
3/8" bowl gouge
1/2" bowl gouge

5 is a very short list, although I think I could get by with these for the majority of what I turn.

Same as Ed.
Maybe I would give up on one of the bowl gouge for a round nose scraper.

For what I'm doing right now,

5/8" bowl gouge
1" round-nose scraper
1" skew
2" roughing gouge
3/8" spindle gouge

I agree, 5 is tight, and I'd add a 1/8" parting tools as #6, but could "make do" with the skew for parting....

Glenn.. you wasted one of your tool wishes with a chuck cause that would come with the lathe that was exempt from this post.  Grin

I WOULD substitute a replicator from any one of the Enterprise space ships!!!  Shocked Shocked  Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

...or maybe a chainfall to lift the logs onto the lathe!!

It's surprising how many tools we use without thinking about it!  Ralph, My chucks came separately, that's why I listed it.

It kind of hits home when you have to clean the shop after a project and it takes you all day to put your tools away. Especially if you have tools for more than one type of woodworking and/or profession.

well... let me answer what I THINK you are asking...

Since the lathe is included...(tailstock and live center too)

1. Drive Center - got to hold the wood until I turn a tenon.
2. Scroll Chuck - got to stick the wood onto the lathe somehow
3. 3/8" U shaped Gouge - I can rough and shape faster with larger..., but REALLY even in golf you only NEED one club, eh?
4. Bench Grinder - to sharpen the gouge (its going to get dull with all the work it will do) and I can make other tools from things I find in the kitchen or on the floor of the shop (don't tell on me!  Smiley)
5. Power Sander - for that final finish (I assume this would include the sand paper)

Does that list count?  Huh Cool Wink
