Extended jaws

I use a tenon for most of the bowls I turn. When it's done I use the Cole extended jaws to remove it. If my bowl has a rounded edge I can't get the stoppers to hold it on the jaws. I only have the 2 different styles of stoppers that come with it. Is there something else? Am I missing something? Thanks

Frank, I think you have identified the limit of Cole jaws.  The shape/edge of the bowl contributes significantly.  If cole jaws won't hold your profile, you would have to explore a donut chuck, a vacuum chuck, possibly a jam chuck, or a friction pad so you can reverse the bowl and remove the tenon.

Frank,

Depending on the shape of your bowl rim, you can sometimes use the Cole jaws in the "Expansion" mode rather than the compression mode. Put the stoppers on the inside.

I don't use the stoppers that came with my Nova Cole jaws, I replaced them with 1" furniture feet that I got from HD. In addition, I made a set of extended length stoppers using 1 1/2" cap head screws and the appropriate sized clear plastic tubing as cushioning.

Nova offers a Cole Jaw Buffer Kit Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register that contains long buffers and 4 sided buffers.  The four sided buffers are sloped in like a dovetail and may hold better for you.  I bought them but haven't needed to try them yet.

I've used the Nova Cole Jaws for several years and they've served me well despite their limitations...which is why just yesterday I finished assembling my new vacuum chuck system.  I'll keep the Cole's as an alternative but I'm hoping the vacuum system will become my 'go to' for finishing the bottom of bowls.

To answer the original question, yes there are other buttons, buffers, pins knobs, or whatever you want to call them available.
Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register
You can always make your own work holding solutions if you get the hardware (bolts)

I just caution those to not be so quick to dismiss cole jaws. Yes they have some limitations but can also perform many tasks that a donut and Vacuum chuck can not.

Ed...You have me curious.  I'm just now starting to use my vacuum pump, or should I say this weekend will be its inaugural usage, but what have you found is still better done with Cole Jaws?  Thanks...

John,

It's hard to use a vacuum chuck on anything with bug holes, cracks or inclusions.  Smiley Smiley

Like Ron said, porous wood and similar don't always work.
If you piece is not "perfectly" round it can be sometime difficult to get a seal. Just like having several sets of jaws for your chuck, you may find you need different size diameters of vacuum chuck.
I have both and use both, each provides a holding force on the piece but in different ways,
IMO each has their pro's and con's. I like cole  jaws because i can make auxiliary jaws to fit most anything, no matter the shape. For certain pieces like natural edge and a-symmetric things, vacuum is the way to go.
I use which ever the job dictates..
