New to turning

I'm pretty new to turning, I'm self taught and always looking for new ideas/techniques etc. and am really glad I found this place!

Here's my first attempt at a natural edge bowl; critiques are welcome. Thanks for having me in this forum!

That's a very nice first attempt...well done.  What kind of wood and finish is it?

Thank you! It's mesquite, and the finish is friction polish.

Nice Mesquite!  It rarely disappoints.
Welcome to the turning world.

Everyday liberating nice things from ordinary chunks of wood---and I like gnarly wood, the outcome is nearly always better than the start.

Nicely done Ron.  How long have you been turning?

About 10 months. Started as a way to get a better turkey call than what I could find in the stores. Just recently started selling bowls; been selling turkey and elk calls for a few months now and pays for my hobby. Only problem now is never enough time in the shop!

Very nice.  I like the lines from this angle.  Any chance of seeing it from the side and the foot?  If not no worries.  I miss living down in AZ and having more access to mesquite.

If you don't have time to do it right, why do you have the time to do it twice?

I've only got one other picture; it shows more of the side but not the bottom. It wont let me post pics now for some reason; I'll try a bit later.

I finished the bottom, but it was tough on this bowl. I've been using cole jaws but that wouldn't work here so I'm making a vacuum chuck. I really enjoy making my own tools when possible.

Very nice design and finish Ron - striking colors in that mesquite, the yellowish sapwood really stands out.

Thank you, Bill. My only previous experience with mesquite was with charcoal; I was pleasantly surprised and it was a nice wood to turn.
