What type of application (drilling method) are you trying to achieve?
There are bit extenders widley available.
A little more info on your  needs, like depth of hole and material to be drilled through would help.

Mike

I presume you are seeking to drill flute blanks.

Bob Bowers in his book on spirals shows an adaption of aircraft bits (surplus) to compressed air for drilling barley twist spiral blanks.  He shows both open bines and also inserting contrasting rods in the holes.

Boeing Surplus had some really long ones during a visit a few years back.

New bits are a frightful cost, but surplus ones were $10-$25.

Ken,
I drill the flute blanks with a gun drill .....expensive. It  has a hole for compress air the length of the gun drill . My setup is not perfect and sometimes i'll get a little drift.not much. I would need these bits for the pilot holes. The short ones I use are dead on for their depth.I havealways been able to use what I drilled.I think I lost only one flute in all these yrs....So if I could find mainly the 7/8" that would help a lot but be good to have the 3/4" and 1" also.Just looking for best deal...If I had them 8" long that would be great ...I wonder what other kind of bit could be used.I cant use an extension because the bit has to go through a guide bushing the size of the bit. Thanks for any help!!

actually they have the deming bits too.....just looked

and if you need them longer a decent welder could add an extension as long as you need/want...I have done that in the past to put pegs in railroad tie walls...3/4'' 3 feet long...priceless!

There are many different types of bits that can work.
What type of bit are you looking for? (cutting tip, flute, etc)
What is your price range?

Ed, I was sort of  wanting extended length Silver and Deming bits. I've heard Boeing Surplus has used bits but my searches so far havent yielded much. Im just looking for the best deal right now. I use the 7/8" bits the most so I could buy the 7/8" one and use it like a pilot for the 1".The 3/4" I use but not nearly as much. I (I am a flute maker and bore my flutes with a gundrill. My setup works very well.I start drilling with the standard length silver and deming bits then go to the gun drill/...My setup works great but very occasionally one will be off a little....The part I drill at the end with the s and d bits are dead on) Thanks for any links or searches you do.

Do you need reduced shank to 1/2"?

Mike,

If I remember correctly the S&D bits are defined as 1/2 inch shank and 6 inches effective length.

There are 7/8 inch bits up to 12 inch overall with 9 inches of flute, but not reduced shank.

Such a bit could be ground down to fit a larger chuck such a 3/4 or 5/8

Ken thats what Ive found too...like these  (I dont see how long though...probably whatever a general purpose bits length is)

These are similar to what I have already.

Im sort of rethinking my setup..Basically I have a bearing box...that goes near tailstock...Has 1 1/2" 4 bolt flange bearing on side nearest headstock.Backside (near tailstock has the guide bushing in it.The guide bushing doesnt really do much..Ive seen some w/o it.I think I can remove it and would get more out of drill bit I have now.(with the guide bushing in the board on back it limits the drill some)The bearing really keeps it in line and the tailstock with drill bit is accurate enough for this.Ill see if I have a pic and may post it.I know this doesnt make a lot of sense right now lol. Thanks for all the help.

This is why I asked about the need for a reduce shank.
I would not grind down a drill bit shank, more work and more expense for a consumable item.
IMO it would be much easier to use a collet chuck in the tailstock to hold the bit. (much less expensive than a 1" Jacobs chuck)

These two statements are a bit confusing. Are you referring to the same thing or is there a bearing and a bushing?
I understand your "general" method but your particular setup really requires a photo before anyone can offer anymore help without guessing.

Mike ---

Take a look at your setup and see if a taper shank bit might work.  A mt2  bit is about $12 and shipping (without checking moq)  with an overall length of about 10 inches.

The advantage is that there is a huge range of sizes, and you do not need a jacobs chuck.

From your description, it is likely to work.
