Tangential Bowls
Apr 5th, 2017 at 9:04pm

Did a search but could not find any entries for this topic. I have read Robert Craig's American Woodturner's article which explains his technique. Generally there seems to be limited information out there on this. I have watched Alex Amoruso's videos and found a small number of other article/mentions but other than Craig's article no real step by step explanation.
I plan on studying this topic at some length and do some experimenting to see if I can catch on. In the meantime I thought I would throw it out here to see if anybody here has attempted it and if they are aware of any other resources on the subject.  I have attached a picture of this type of vessel.
Thanks
Bruce
PS: so there is no misunderstanding, the attached picture is not my work. It is an example I pulled off of the Internet. It is listed as being done by Ward Stevens.

Bruce, I'm aware of it and have done it years ago, with stave and horizontal segments.
IMO It's a process that relies heavily on the shape or profile of the piece. Just masking evenly spaced squiggly lines gets old quickly (doesn't look good either)
Many people start experimenting with this process using birds-mouth router bits.
Your pieces look nice and good luck with your experimentation.

To Ed's defense, I amended my original post to add the PS after I saw Ed's original comment. I had put the images up as an example and then realized people might mistake them as mine.

Bruce

I sure would like to know what you find out about it.  I like seeing stave work and how others add it to segmented works to.

I finally got my Jerry Bennett segmented sled all done and hope to be using it in the next month when I have a lot of things done for others first.

Please PM me with what you find.

The Seg-Easy sled is more applicable to cutting brick-lay or "standard" segments, not cutting staves.

Awesome article pg 24 . A suppose you just cu t an angle on bottom of each stave do acheive desired twist when gluing up.

Thanks for the pdf.
There are a few different methods of approaching tangential construction.
One is the twisting method, taking standard shaped staves and twisting them to create the pattern and the other is to cut the staves so that they align in a tangential or vortex pattern without twisting. Different patterns are achieved from each method and from the overall shape of the piece (it's profile).
