Another Gift Box
Apr 15th, 2017 at 6:44pm

I made this music box for another friend's birthday. It is turned from cherry and stained with LMF (Laurel Mountain Forge) "Nut Brown". I like that color as it isn't overly red like maple stain. The 2" beveled glass is interesting in that it magnifies the view of the movement.

Eric, is there a trick in drying so as to avoid an oval shape, or is it turned twice? Or is it a secret?

Just dry wood. I've not had a problem with oval shapes - yet, anyway. Actually, I do notice a very slight out of round that, actually makes the lid fit better.

Steve: It's an 18 note movement that I get from musicboxattic.com. They have a selection of over a hundred tunes and frequently have 15 -20% off sales. I have also made boxes using their 30 note movements that are really nice albeit, expensive. I did a little tutorial about making music boxes a couple of years ago. Send me your e-mail address, if interested.
