Who or What Inspires You

We all come from varied backgrounds and talents. Some of us channel a different talent into our woodturning, other times its another person's work or a walk on the beach that inspires us to try something different.

"Some of us channel a different talent into our woodturning"

Since I have no talent, I am easily inspired by those that think they do! Grin Grin

For myself, Inspiration can come from just about anywhere.
A shape, form or pattern, simple or complex can trigger an idea, whether it's natural or man made is irrelevant.  An unfilled need in search of a solution, an improvement on an established idea, someone else s work I like or dislike.
(While I do not "follow" other turners, I am aware of their work BUT I never consciously try to emulate anyone else s work)
If I make a piece for someone specific, something about them will usually find it's way into the work. Whether it's species of wood, color, intended use, or number of segments. a personalized trait can inspire a design decision.
Mostly the wood itself is enough inspiration for me. I enjoy working with it. Many times I only need to see a piece of wood and immediately know what I want to make from it.
I could go on but you get the idea.

One of the 1st issues of FineWoodworking in 1975 featured Bob Stocksdale. His elegantly simple forms began it for me.

OK, this sounds corny, but it's the discussions and pictures posted here that give me inspiration.

Easy to start, but I don't know where I would end...

WHO?

Mike Stafford, George Watkins are two box makers that do beautiful work and are willing to share their art.

Cindy Drozda,

Alan Lacer,

David Elsworth,

and more...

WHAT?

occasionally I see a ceramic piece that makes me think "I wonder if I could do that on the lathe?"
