Wooden. Beyond that, not a clue
Removing spur center
Apr 25th, 2017 at 4:41pm

Just got a lathe, can't figure out how the spur center comes out. Sprayed penetrating oil everywhere. Locked the wheel in place and tried unscrewing it with pliers as well as popping it out with a metal rod. Any ideas would be appreciated.

If the spindle is hollow all the way through (which I doubt on this lathe) you usually put a rod through the back side and tap it out.
Otherwise, a slide hammer comes to mind.

Looks very similar to my headstock. I've a nut on the threaded spindle which I unwind with a 26mm spanner which push's the drive centre out of the headstock. As previous poster said, if there's access from the back, try putting in a length of steel rod (6mm/1/4") and tap it gently, short sharp taps. I have to do this for removing my live centre from my tailstock end.

Can you give the make and model of the lathe?

I had one once with the same problem.  Turned out the previous owner had used steel wool to keep it from slipping in the taper.  It had transmorgified over time to make a fairly solid chunk.  Took lots of penetrating oil, love taps from a hammer, a pipe wrench, and usage of foul language to free it.

If you can find an auto mechanic,  use a tie rod removal tool it may work to remove your drive center. The tool is like a tapered tuning fork and is designed to separate the tapered shaft of steering tie rods on cars. Good luck.

Those are usually refereed to as pickle forks and they will more than likely damage the spindle. (I have several of them)

Lucas

First Welcome and glad to have you here.  I think the others have already made good suggestions so I will not add anymore to it.

I had to lock the spindle, and grab the drive spur with some vise grips and twist while a friend persuaded it with the knockout bar.

Now that it's out, you may want/need to get a morse taper reamer to clean up the spindle this before you try again.

I second the suggestion for the Morse taper reamer.  And toss the center and buy a new one.

Ed. I don't think Cepko was referring to Lucas' problem!

You're correct, I did confused the two.  Embarrassed I suppose it's a more common problem than I previously thought.
I still recommend a reamer to clean the taper.
There are really only a few methods of removing a press fit union like a morse tpaer.
penetrating lubricant, pressure, vibration and heat. How you approach these methods depends on many factors. Choices tend to be limited on older machine for fear of damaging parts that can no longer be easily found.
It will be nice to hear how Lucas finally resolves his problem.

Try heating the shaft with a torch I`m pretty sure your bearings will need replacing after all the "love and attention" anyway . Good luck and let us know how it ends up.

A few yrs ago I was building bicycles. Degreasing bearings, etc. using cans of Brake Cleaner, rust busters, whatever Sad. (still do)  Please do not torch around any of those compounds. I am not a chemist or expert but narratives convinced me to not combine torches, poor ventilation, and unknown compounds.
