Dumb Question
May 11th, 2017 at 6:13pm

I hear there are no dumb questions.  Hope this is not the first.

New to turning and I have a new/old Jet Mini that I bought in about 2000 and only used once or twice before getting discouraged.  Well, I'm back at it.

I bought a Delta midi lathe stand and built a table to fit the top as the Mini and the Midi are two different sizes.  That is now complete and waiting for the Jet to be mounted to the table top.  The Jet has 4 plastic/rubber feet on the bottom.. probably for actual use on a workbench or ???

So, to the question:
Do I remove the rubber feet and simply bolt the lathe to the table or do I countersink 4 holes in the table that these feet will sit into?

It may be fine either way as long as I'm not turning unbalanced blocks.. or I may be totally wrong.

Help.. and thanks

Bill

My mini-lathe had bolts on the rubber feet that could be removed, allowing me to replace with longer bolts to mount with the rubber feet in place.  Might just be my bench, but I believe the rubber feet dampen some vibration and noise.  If your feet are different, I would consider replacing the feet with cutouts from one of those interlocking anti-fatigue mat blocks to place between lathe and benchtop.

You might consider adding a strongly mounted shelf to the stand, so that extra weight can be added.  Can be bags of sand, concrete blocks, . . .

I did the exact same with my PennState one when I was in a wheel chair and thank goodness after 7 years at the VA I am out.  One thing to think about is to make sure the bench has enough weight so the lathes do not shake and rattle and roll when you but a bowl piece on.

I built my original bench with a vertical slot at each end where I put a 2'X2' concrete paver.
