It's always been my understanding that crotch figure like that is less stable than "normal" grain. Some crotch grain American elm I made into bowls a year ago became wavy across the figure after drying (I make once turned bowls).   Have you turned plates from crotch before?

thats the best part im not using the crotch for the plates.  the crotch part will be cut down into knife handle sized blocks and sent off for stabilizing. also this is kiln dried wood (thats just a bit of denatured alcohol splashed on to sho the color better )

Will be lovely plates.

How thick a bottom is your target??   Thinking of knife cuts over time.

Now that is something good to think about.  All of the ones I have made were very figured and used for display.

the plates i made for my house are 1.25 total thicknes to the lip will have to check the bottom thickness.  if your nore sawing on your steak the plates hardly get scored (i made the set of knives for the plate buyer)  will post picters a bit later

as to how thick about 5/8 inch. these 14 inch will be a bit thickerr and will have a 4.5 inch dovetailed circle on the back (maybe only 1/8 to 3/16 deep) so that down the road i can rechuck the plates and sand clean if need be

thanks im a knife maker first wood turner like  5th
i tell everyone i dont smelt the steel or grow the trees but i do all the other stuff from cutting the sheet/bars into blanks to heat treat and finishing
these plates are going to be a different kind of challenge.  that does not even include how im going to cut up the "waste" wood into handle blanks

I had a friend in Montana who was an airman then who made knives.  He started by using a 3" to 4" ball bearing and worked from there.  All I could say is he did a lot of work folding them over and over and over again, but the knife was SHARP and looked great.

I really like yours with the handles done so nicely also.

Nice work Lloyd!

If I can ask, did you get the wood from a local source, or did you buy the wood already kiln dried?

Those plates look like... they need a steak!  Cheesy Thumbs Up
