Not sure where to put this. I am still deciding on a new lathe but am interested in a good used one if I could get one.  I am located in San Diego. If anyone has one? Also any tips on buying used lathe?? I am very close to the going new with the Nova 1624. I am sure this will spark much debate. But what else is there to do on a Saturday when taking a break from turning.

There is a woodturning club in San Diego, suggest you contact them. They may know of a member that has or is upgrading and have a good used lathe to sell.

Do you belong to the San Diego Woodturner's? They have a classified section in their newsletter. They also know when a lathe comes up for sale in the area. Lynn

Yes just joined yesterday. Thank you.
The Delmar fair is here and spoke to them at the event. That is where one of the members was not a fan of the Nova lathe. But like anything always find different opinions!
Thanks

Steve

There are all kinds of people who are sold on one thing to get.  So get to know everyone and see what all of them say.

I know Nova was a great lathe back when it was made down under and then they had a lot of problems when they went to have the Chinese made them and the chucks had problems also, but I think they have it all under control now. Maybe that is why the one guy had a bad experience with one at one time.
I say go for what your budget says and even later you can upgrade. Thumbs Up

Watch the local craigslist, I found a good deal on a Record CL3 that had been stored unassembled since new in 1992.I've since spent way more than I paid for it on accessories chisels, chucks and sharpening stuff.

Not sure which model of Nova that is, but if you change speeds by moving the belt, it is rather inconvenient. Variable speed is one of those things that if you have it, you never go back to changing belts.

I purchased a Nova 16-24 back in November. Mine was unusable with a bad spindle right out of the box. Customer service was terrible. Safe to say that my next lathe will not be another Nova.

Do not buy a lathe with Reeves drive. Very picky and needs gentle care.

Figure out how far you are willing to drive, and extend the CL search to there.
I had to drive 2.5 hours...about my limit, but an almost brandy new lathe I got for half off.

I have a 1624ii only a couple of months and I like it.
for the money and someone who is on a budget and
my daughters going to college, this a great lathe.
29inchs outboard turning?for less the a thousand?
And for changing the Belt.for the amount of times I
stop the lathe to look at my work,it only takes about
20 seconds. Grin

This.  I battled a Reeves drive for way to long.  Don't make that mistake.
