I have been thinking about replacing my lathe. Currently I use a Jet 14 X 42. I want a 20" lathe but not sure which one. I do not like the motor extended beyond the lathe frame, and the new lathe must have a electronic variable speed control.
Anyone have an idea?

Oneway 2036 to die for. And you can turn way more than 20" on outboard side if your so inclined.

I'm pretty happy with the PM 3520.  Motor only sticks out if you have the headstock slid all the way to the left, and I rarely have it in that position.

Steve  you can't go wrong with the PM3520B 2 hp 20" turning capacity unless you buy the 18" extension then you can turn way bigger, 5 year warranty I turned some massive bowls on mine so for the money you can't go wrong especially if you buy during the 15% off sale they have every year. you can keep it for 5 years then sell it for almost 3,000 and get a new one or upgrade

The Powermatic is good equipment & I have been looking at them. I also have been looking at the Rikon 20 x36, Baileigh 18 x 40 and the Grizzly 20 x 43.  Anybody know about these lathes?  S

Great Lathe, but motor extends beyond the frame.  Can you attach the 18" to the left so it extends beyond the motor.  All this has to do with how my shop is set up.

I think I'm missing something. Since the PM3520B has a sliding headstock, it can be moved to the right and no longer extend beyond the bed. This does shorten the usable length about 12".

My suggestion is that if you are looking at the OneWay 2036, consider the 2436 and the $ difference is small compared to other features (weight, capacity, etc.).  I don't often hear people say, "Boy I wish I had a smaller lathe."

I'm lost on your situation, Steve.  You can't have the motor extend 12" past the left side of the frame, but you can have an extension that extends 18" past the left side of the frame?
