As a new turner I need some assistance with my imagination. I have a couple pretty nice blanks but not sure where to go with them.  I don't want to to do pens.  What is an interesting thing to make from this size blank?  Keep in mind I am a beginner.

That size could make a top or two, or an egg or two, . . .

My suggestion for a new turner is to get a fairly knot free 2x6x8' and a fairly knot free 2x2x8' and gain some experience with the tools, body movement, and sharpening.  SPF (spruce-pine-fir) white wood is soft and inexpensive.  A second choice would be some 8/4 and 12/4 poplar boards to cut into pieces and practice.  For the first ten pieces of wood, just concentrate on making shavings.  For the next ten pieces, concentrate on making concave and convex surfaces.  For the third ten pieces, sketch out a shape or two and try to replicate a number of times.

Then progress to nicer wood.  That's what I did.

My suggestion for a new turner with figured wood is to put it away. Go to the lumber yard or box store and buy some construction grade 2"X2" wood. Then turn to your hearts content on the cheap. With no worries about what it will look like when finished. Learn how to use a gouge, skew and a parting tool.

When you have done all this you will know what to make out of the "nice" wood.

Ice Cream scoop or Screwdriver handles, nice projects to start with. I use those that I've made still with satisfaction--

I have tried several 2x4 turnings to practice as well as a glued up cedar board bowl.  They did not turn out well  at all.  I have made 10 projects (bowls, boxes & vases) so far with walnut, ash and maple and they came out much better.  The soft woods seem to tear and chip.  I mostly use the Robert Sorby Soveriegn tools with the HSS tips. I have attached a file of some of my first 10 pieces.

As others have said, put the figured walnut aside. At this time focus on tool control. Make shavings, try some green wood.

Thanks for the suggestions.  This piece of wood cost $1.50 so it's not like i"ll be out much if I screw it up.  I think maybe a couple eggs or another lidded box.  Eggs seem to me like they would be more difficult than a box.  I'll have to find some videos.

Sound like you are doing more scrapping then bowl or spindle gouge work.  With soft wood and scrapping you will get a ton of tear out since you can not support the fibers of the wood like a gouge can and keeping the bevel on the wood.

Robo Hippy can tell you a ton more about scrapping more then I can tho.

Mark

While he doesn't demonstrate making an egg, my cuts with a detail spindle gouge on eggs were much improved after watching on Youtube the three videos on slicing cuts by Mark Silay.

The soft woods chip out because of a couple of different reasons, tool sharpness, presentation to the wood, and the charactistics of soft wood.
Get the technique down with the soft wood, and there will be minimal sanding needed on the hard woods.
But if you just got to, a nice goblet out of the Walnut would be cool

I practiced on some 2x4 and other junk wood over the past two days. Arlin Eastman's post about scraping vs cutting is correct. I turned an egg, a couple mushrooms and a mouse. I am able to "cut" using the traditional tools but with the Sorby Soverign set I guess its all you can do is scrape.  They demonstrate using a shear scraping technique by turning the tool head at an angle that smooths things out a bit.
