Definitely over rated. Turns easily, but +1 on turning brown... Fast. One other problem. I turned some in the winter so I was wearing a sweatshirt. It stained the sweat shirt red. It also stained my shirt underneath, and my undershirt. If that wasn't enough, it stained my skin, and took two days for it to wear off. It is no wonder they used to use it for coloring lipstick. Sheesh!

Most of the "colored" woods will lose or change a certain degree of their vibrant "fresh-cut" color over time. As for it's working properties, there are no significant challenges.
It can be a sensitizer, check a wood toxicity chart before using any unfamiliar exotic.

Speaking directly to finishing, however, I've found it relatively easy to produce a clean surface and the wood reciprocates with a warm lustor.
