I'm picking up a Cannon Rebel 6i soon. Seems to be all I need and more.

canon rebel T5 is a good camera for around $350. the body will use both the EF and the EF-S lens. Amazon has it listed at $339 with 18-55mm lens. kits with accessories are around $450. i have one that is 2 years old and takes great pictures.

Something like a Canon PowerShot SX410 IS.
Under $200, great for the price IMO

I upgraded from an SX30 IS, great camera. I've taken some of my best shots to date with it. I think they're great all around cameras for those that don't want to have to think about taking a photo.
JMO, I'm a woodworker, not a photographer.

You can certainly do a lot more with that type of camera than just take product shots of your flutes.
That one and similar models have a long zoom, image stabilization lots of easy pre-set modes and shoot video as well.
For good quality photos, (better than your phone) without spending $400 and up, these are quite good IMO.

I own a Nikon D5500 and my wife owns a $100 Nikon Coolpix and it takes darn good photos.

IMO its has more to do with the person behind the camera than the camera in front of the person when you want good images.

you are 100% correct. i get newsletters from several professional (ie: this is all they do for a living) photographers and they ALL say the same thing.

Yep, you can always take a bad photo, no matter what equipment you have but a good photographer can take a good photo with just about anything.

Personally, I waited until I had (in my mind  Roll Eyes) a decent grip on taking photos before I decided to upgrade equipment.

Mike

You might also find very useful an image manipulation program to crop, adjust color levels and contrast, et cetera.  I use GIMP, which is free, but there is a learning curve.

I don't know if all cameras today are equally helpful when moving pictures to the computer.
