BLO or Tung Oil Mix
Jul 30th, 2017 at 8:58pm

I'm out of the Tung oil, dna, shellac mix that I've used for awhile and was wondering how it compares to the BLO Mix.  I have to order pure Tung oil. I usually get it from woodcraft.  But I think I can get BLO locally.

Most big box stores carry BLO, but you are correct that pure Tung oil is harder to find.  None of the hardware stores in our area carry it, but fortunately we spend a couple of week each year at a time-share condo, and there is a hardware store nearby that does carry Tung oil.

You can use BLO in any formula that calls for Tung oil.  Tung oil is more water resistant.  It also cures to a light amber color, while BLO cures to a darker color.

I keep both in my shop because there are some projects that need the darker color of BLO.

BLO also lasts far longer than tung oil in the can. I have a can from the 1980's that is still good but a little darker now! I recently rediscovered it when I rearranged my shop. I used it many years ago in my previous house for a few projects, sealed it up ( by closing theh cap!) and forgot about it.

So true.  I'm pretty sure that the can I'm working on is something I inherited from the previous owner of our former home.  We bought that house 43 years ago - - -

I bought some BLO and it seems to work just as good as the Tung oil. Do you buff, then use carnuba or ten wax?  It seems to be glossy with just a couple coats.  Thanks for all the info.
