What is the best woodturning advice anyone has ever given yo

QOTW: What is the best woodturning advice anyone has ever given you?

1) Use sandpaper as if someone else is paying for it.

2) Don't sharpen tools because they are dull, sharpen them because they could be sharper.
(In other words don't wait until they are dull)

Sharpening a pencil.

If you can remember how you sharpen a pencil, you will remember how to address the grain.

That's not woodturning advice. That's life advice.

Without doubt there are two pieces of advice I was given which kept me in woodturning at the beginning which are 1. listen to the sound your tools are making  and 2. every 2 years or so go to a professional turner and get him to assess your turning. Why well we all get into bad habits we are human Colin

It can be helpful to have someone asses your methods of work from time to time to reveal "bad habits" but where do the "professionals" go for this advice? (I'm serious)
Without anyone to question them, any bad habits a 'professional" has usually ends up being part of there teaching curriculum. Remember, not all "professionals" agree on any given subject.
