Not even new yet.

Hi everyone my name is Jay, I'm getting ready to purchase my first lathe and could use some advice. Now I have never touched a wood lathe so I don't have a clue on anything. I really trying to avoid spending a lot of money since I don't know for sure that I will enjoy turning. I've never purchased anything except some throwaway tools from harbor freight but I have been Looking at there 10x18 lathe. Is this a good first lathe or is it a complete wast of my money?

Hi Jay, Welcome to the club.  I am also very new at this and bought my HF lathe in April.  I bought the larger one based on the reviews I read. I don't know anything about the smaller lathe from HF. If the smaller one is as good as the larger one it will be a good place to start.  The other option would be if you can find a good deal on craigslist. Don't forget about all the other stuff you will need to buy. Chisels, chucks, sandpaper, finishing supplies, it adds up pretty quick. I am really enjoying the turning process and if you have gotten this far you probably will too.

Welcome to the forum.
For someone like you who isn't positive about woodturning just yet, it would probably be a good idea to find a local woodworking chapter or club. They will more than likely be able to teach you some things but more importantly, let you give it a try before you commit to spending too much money.

Agree with Ed, finding a club or someone nearby that does turning will help you make the decision.
Don't be shy about going to a club or asking around, remember that ALL started the same way.

Thanks guys, I'll have to look into clubs around me, unless anyone knows of a good one in Northwest Indiana.
