There really is no measurable flex once the jaws are mounted. The design simply keeps the jaws aligned on the same plane.
The extensions I made fit with a tight tolerance fit, I wax the mating surfaces to keep them moving smoothly without play.

Cole jaws are no different than standard metal jaws. For "standard" round pieces, slots are not necessary and actually more of a hassle.

Slots are good for asymmetric pieces but as mentioned above require the center point from the tailstock to initially center the piece before securing it via slots or other fastening method.

I personally don't use the tailstock when I'm trying to finish tooling the bottom of a piece, it just gets in the way and in most cases for me is not necessary.

Oneway's Jumbo Jaws also have slots as well as screw holes.

Presumably the Nova buttons might fit on other jaws besides Nova's, if they use the same screw thread (or perhaps the screws could be swapped out as necessary?).

The "SOS Chuckies" from RubberChucky.com are another option for "buttons" on Cole jaws (or directly on the chuck, for that matter).
