What non-lathe woodturning tool do you keep close by.
Aug 21st, 2017 at 7:43am

This week's question comes from Tony Rozendaal and he asks...

QOTW: What non-lathe / non-woodturning tool do you keep close to the lathe and for what use?

I have a set of wrenches starting at 1/4" to 5/8" with one edge sharpen. I use it to cut tenons.

I also have two pieces of coat hanger which I sometimes use to check the wall thickness of something I'm turning. (picture to follow)

I have a set of hex-head allen wrenches that I use conjunction with my chucks.

My wife said she keeps a pencil near by.  She uses it to mark high spots etc. on her turnings so she knows where to shave some wood off.

Tom, I just said that the aliens captured me Cheesy  and took me for a flight in their spaceship for several hours;D  Believe or not, my wife believed me. Or at least she said that would explain why I would stay in the shop for so long  Smiley

A broom, not that I use it often enough! But seriously, lately I've been using my little 3 gallon air compressor a lot. So much so that the pressure relief valve started to leak- a lot. I've had it for around 15 years, so it does not owe me anything. I picked up (got it today) an eight gallon California Air compressor that is quiet- very quiet as in you can easily have a conversation with it running. I figure it will be a lot safer as well. The old one would make you jump out of your shoes when it kicked it unexpectedly- like every time you want to make a finishing cut with a skew!!! Grin

Chris, I have heard that the California Air Compressors are really quiet.  It will be interesting to hear how you like it.  I currently have a very noise HF 21 gal compressor.  So I'm wondering if the 8 gal would handle the job.  What size was your old one.  I know if it is quieter, I might not mind it running more frequently.

So far, so good. It runs well, and puts out a fair amount of air. The old 3 gallon unit recharged quicker, but also discharged quicker, so it would run very often, and very loudly. This new one is oil less, so I am not sure how long it will last, but at under $180, if I get a few years out of it I'll be happy!

Interesting on the db on the California compressor, the link Chris added has a nice sound video comparison.
For answering the QOTW I'd say it's my 1" wide rolls of sandpaper I've got hanging overhead and slightly to the left of my lathe. Simple to grab a small piece of the grit I'm wanting and keep on turning.

Last night in the shop i realized there is a non-turning tool that I use everyday and could not live without.  It is my jumbo dust pan from Home Depot.  It sure makes cleanup a lot easier.

This question was my suggestion so I better answer.

- a scissors to cut sandpaper into smaller pieces
- regular wood chisel and mallet to take bark off log sections - just a spot for a spur drive or a center, or all the bark so it won't come off at speed
- thanks to Steve Doerr, I was reminded of of my aluminum grain scoop that I use to clean up under the lathe

On the air compressor topic, I installed a stationary compressor in a few years ago - a 60 gallon 3HP 220 volt - there is just nothing like it. Biggest reason was to run a 2-inch orbital sander which gets a lot of use in certain situations. But I also have a plasma cutter and mechanics air tools, so it gets quite a bit of non-woodturning use.

Our local club bought one of those California compressors when Menards (local big box chain) had them on sale last spring.  Very nice small compressor.

Here is something else I have that needed to use today. This magnet is great for finding small metal items such as screws in a pile of wood chips

Yup,  mine is never out of reach.  My small Japanese back saw is nearby also.  Great for the last bit when parting off.
