hard wood in the middle...
Sep 1st, 2017 at 5:37pm

ok gang...heres a question..im ot even sure if there is a remedy, but here goes...I glued about 8 cedar planks 6 inches wide by 18 inches long to try and turn a lamp...It came out ok I guess for being one of my forst turns, and by far the biggest so far...Anyway the problem is...It seems that the board in the middle had a different color and was obviously harder than the others...therefore the cutting was extremely bouncy...at first I thought that it was a balance problem, but it became obvious that the piece was perfectly round and centered and the problem was the hardwood in the middle...any comments...

I think the profile looks good for a lamp.  Thumbs Up
As far as the hard/soft wood laminate goes, all I can say is keep you tools sharp, ride the bevel as lightly as you can and raise the speed.

A similar situation arises when turning a bowl with crotch grain.  As Ed has suggested, keep a sharp edge on the tool and a light touch.

As high a speed as your're comfortable with and as others have said, sharp chisels. Nice looking lamp by the way, please post a photo when finished.  Thumbs Up
