Help...What kind of bowl am I?
Sep 2nd, 2017 at 7:18pm

Help...Recently I purchased a 14 inch wide by 6 inches tall turned wooden bowl at an estate sale. The wall thickness is 3/16 of an inch. Interesting huh?
I have searched and searched the internet for a bowl like this and have had zero luck so far. It appears from the side that the growth rings are wider at the rim of the bowel and get closer together as I go down the bowl and to the center. I've counted 200 rings so far but the smaller ones I'll need a magnifying glass but there looks to be a hundred more to go. I hope the photos help you see what I'm seeing...what is it I have anyway? The bowl has really thin sides so this must be something to do and have the whole thing hold together...

In all honesty it looks like a plywood bow, but do t quote me ☺l. I made one similar from Baltic Birch plywood in high school.

At least that's what my feeling is anyway, it is really hard to tell from the photos.

I agree with Curtis, I think it's made out of plywood also.

Well that's a bummer is its plywood. Its so light and seems very sturdy. I still wonder about the growth rings and why they would go from wide thick on the outer rim to very fine and close together as you get the the center of the bowl. Is this what should be expected from plywood?
It seems like the rings wouldn't be so continuous going around the bowl and getting smaller in such a way all the way to the center of the bowl. Thank you all for your input. I remember Sargent Shultz in Hogan's Heros.."I know nothing" except I love wood....

I'm wondering if it might be "laid up" from strips of bamboo. Difficult to tell from pictures.

If you want to get technical, IMO it's made from LVL

Laminated Veneer Lumber
The laminated layers (plies) are all oriented in the same direction.
In plywood, the plies alternate orientation 90 degrees.

My wife has a vase that has very similar striations and is also incredibly light...her's is bamboo.  If yours is almost paper-light then I suggest it's also bamboo.

Baltic birch plywood (all plywood really) is made of LVR I thinks.

Thank you all...I still question the layer thickness going from wide at the rim to narrow at the bottom of the bowl. The gradation really simulates growth rings.
It is very light so maybe the bamboo...or the LVR.
Thanks again.

You can find these at stores like Pier 1, or Michaels.  I agree it may not be "wood" at all - I believe that Bamboo is technically a grass.

Google: Pier 1 spun bamboo bowl

You will find lots of them.

Its because of the curvature of the bowl. If you where to slice the bowl in half from top to bottom and look at the cut edge the laminations would be the same size. Its also possible that the person that make this used different laminated boards.

The photo shows the giveaway that is some sort of ply or LVL.

A carpenter's lumber yard may have a sample piece of LVL near the counter that one could see in person.  Don't know if they would cut LVL's to length for carpenters, and sell or give away any offcuts.
