WTB Olive Wood (Read 1,142 times)

Posts: 784 Laurinburg North Carolina USA Gender:	WTB Olive Wood Sep 28^th, 2017 at 11:49pm I am looking for some olive wood in approx size 2" x 2" x 34"....dry or green.Anyone have something close to this or know of a source? Size is somewhat flexible.Thanks in advance

Off the top of my head I would say that's a big ask.
Fist of all, it's going to be expensive if you can find it. I personally have never seen a olive blank the size you need. Olive is a fruit tree and doesn't tend to grow straight.
Again, if you were to find one, I would make sure it's dry, Olive has a tendency to crack if not dried properly and sometimes even then.

I would suggest calling some vendors that sell Olive and asking them for your specific size.

I found some kind of it from out west in Las Vegas a few months ago....Im not sure what kind but from what I gather it was considered a trash tree out there. I know it wasnt like is over in the Mid East but was pretty. You could smell the olive in the wood really strong. I am trying to get some more from this guy but right now he is busy moving. It worked well and I had some to crack like at the end but I had length enough to use. I bored the 4 blanks,,,,,3 of them 3/4" bore and 1 of them 7/8" bore,then rough turned them round and wrapped them up to slow the drying somewhat and after a few weeks then turned them round but I still left them bigger than what I needed for a flute.They are dried completely now.I turned them closer to size this week.This was total experiment....I think it is going to finish up good..... Wonder what kind I have?

CA produces about 95% of the olives in the U.S. due to the climate. As far as the species goes it could be anything. There are tons of varieties grown for all different reasons, fruit, oil, etc.

I have turned it before and liked it with its greenish brown color. In a local store had some real olive wood and the plank was 2x14x35 and the price was over $800 and do not know if it is still there or not.

When I was out west at the Canyon de Shelly Nat Park, the locals were mentioning how the Russian Olive had invaded the canyon and was overrunning the place. They spend alot of time and money trying to slowly eradicate it but I doubt it will ever be completely gone.

They definitely called it trashwood!! Thumbs Up

Read that someone has imported alot of olive wood from Italy from when they had to tear up and burn their orchards due to some sort of infection in the trees.
