shellawax cream over stained turnings
Oct 1st, 2017 at 4:34pm

I have turned a base and finial for a hollow form I am working on. They are made from walnut and stained with an Ebony oil base stain. I planed on using Shellawax cream as a friction polish but is says not to use on oil base stains. Has anyone tried this and did it work. Would a sander sealer before the polish help.
Thanks
Al

"Shellawax is a finish in its own right and is not designed to be used over any other finishes.
Shellawax can be used over a stain so long as it is water-based.
Do not use Shellawax over oil- or spirit-based stains or dyes."

Yes I read that. Just curious why not. I would think once the stain is cured it should bond

Its simply not compatible and most likely would peel or flake off.

I would suggest testing what you want to do on a scrap piece so you can see for yourself what happens.
