Laguna spindle lock question
Oct 1st, 2017 at 10:27pm

I have the Laguna 18/36 and I like it alot but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to use the spindle lock. It works if you push it in, but is there a way to make it stay in? I was doing some power sanding on a bowl and wanted to lock it but keeping it pushed in with one hand and using the sander with the other doesnt work very well. Anyone have this lathe and know how to make it stay in without holding it in, or can you even do that.

Thanks

Ken,
In response, let me say that I also really like my Laguna 18/36 a lot. One aspect that is convenient is the very feature that you want to disable. I also have a Nova Comet 2 and after locking the spindle I have mistakenly turned on the motor. Not good!
That being said, what you could do is use the tool rest positioned to hold the button depressed. Of course I think it would be prudent to have the emergency stop switch engaged while performing this trick.

The spindle lock is not designed to stay engaged, this is a safety feature.
Many people don't like this feature and have come up with many work arounds that I won't discuss.
I would suggest if you want to lock the spindle from rotating for a prolonged period of time to use the indexing system.

Clark, Im not really wanting to disable it, I like the way it works, I was just trying to find a way to lock it briefly while I power sanded tough spots. I may try something using the tool rest like you suggested. Im not worried about turning the lathe on with it locked, as I dont power sand with the bowl moving anyways.

Ed
I have done that very thing (use the indexing system) but I dont really sand a prolonged period of time, just a minute or so then move the bowl to a new spot, and so on. The indexing system way does work, its just more of a pain to keep setting it over and over.

Ken, Sam Angelo (Wyoming Woodturner) on You-tube, has a video on how he solved this problem on his PM model lathe. He came up with a rather unique way of doing it, it might work on your lathe. If not, it might give you an idea on some other way of doing it.

On my 3520B, I use a magnet to keep the spindle lock in. Thumbs Up

Sam uses a strap hinge, it's a pretty cool bit of thinking.

You can use the indexing system built in the lathe. it will lock the spindle in one position. Just remember to disengage the lock when you are done.

I watched Sams youtube vid a few times and finally got around to making one and it does work to keep the spindle lock in. i also painted it bright red on the side showing when it is engaged  as a warning to my eyes as I reach over for the on switch. Smiley

It is a good thing for when i'm trying to remove a spindle or face plate but not so much for locking it for sanding specific spots as there are only 2 places the lock engages and it is almost never where I want it to lock for sanding.

A better thing would be for PM to add a failsafe switch that engages whenever the lock is in place. Shocked

Many machines have that feature, I don't know why lathes are slow to adapt.
Along with being able to have the spindle lock stay in the engaged position,
You shouldn't be able to start the machine with the spindle lock engaged.
You shouldn't be able to engage the spindle lock while the machine is running.

In general, all woodworking tools are slow to adapt compared to the technology introduced in other fields. I think it just keeps them cheap to produce. For me it is just crazy seeing a new woodworking tools with displays, touch-pads, switches, etc. from 25/30 years ago technology.

The woodworking tools market isn't as large as other sectors and they are not compelled legally to do anything.
Simple safety devices which also aide the user are inexpensive and should not need to be legislated. IMO
The tools that do have some more "advanced" features are typically priced at a premium.
An electromechanical switch for a spindle lock is far from an advanced feature or new technology.
