Just one of those days

Sometimes the smart thing to do is leave the shop and go rake leaves.

Today, I was making a sleeve to fit over and decorate a pill container.  I carefully turned a top - but as I was fine tuning the edge, the skew caught the wood and triggered a hidden crack to open, sending a large chunk off to the other side of the shop.

So I found another piece of the same wood, and carefully turned another top.  I reversed it, remounting it on my chuck in expansion mode.  After working on it for a few minutes, I sensed that it was loose, so I stopped the lathe to tighten the grip.  And split the wood.

So I found a third piece of wood (different species this time), and carefully turned and finished the piece.  This time, as I was parting off the completed piece, my tool rest snapped off - just fractured just below where the post entered the cross arm.  Not the first time this has happened to me, but this time there was no catch or other abnormal shock - just normal parting.

Yeah, the leaves need raking.
