Lighting for display area

What are your recommendations for lighting your display area at art shows?

The last indoor show we did, all we had was the ambient lighting from the venue and did not show our pieces to the best advantage.

We are preparing for the same show this spring and will have a larger display area and access to electrical outlets.

Suggestions????

My thinking is to look at the color temp of any lighting you choose.

A natural light temp is in the 5600º range.

You might think about having a warmer light temp as most people have warmer incandescent lighting in their homes.

Ironically, the color warmth goes up as the temp number goes down. A temp of 3300 is warmer...more red tones... where a temp of 8000 is quite cool and bluish.

You can still use fluorescent lighting if the bulbs are in that 5600 range.

Are you thinking of flooding the booth or highlighting specific pieces?

While I agree with most of what Ralph said, It's hard to give suggestions without knowing your booth setup.
I'm not quite sure about this though

Like many people, I've been slowly changing out all of the older light bulbs and fixtures in my house from incandescent and fluorescent, for a brighter (higher color temp) LED's. It is amazing to me just how much better (more accurate) things look.
It's a balancing act to be sure.
Not knowing what color temp the lighting of the venue is, if possible I would probably lean toward using some type of LED lighting on an individual piece or specific area to accurately show the color/contrast of the art.

I would suggest LED lights in the 5000k-6000k color range. IMO wood look best in that light.

Thanks for the input on color temp etc.  Thumbs Up

The venue that we will be setting up in has chandelier type incandescent  lighting, high ceiling.

I wasn't clear in my original question. I should have stressed "fixtures". We will have free standing shelving and tables in an approximate 10x20 space against a wall.

There are plenty of LED under counter lighting kits available. They are usually linkable (less outlets to worry about).
