Osage Orange Bowl
Nov 5th, 2017 at 10:19pm

A former coworker had brought me some Osage Orange which was cut near Peoria, IL a couple years ago.  I cored it out (as a demo for our woodturning club) and this is the largest bowl. Sanded to 400 and all I had to put on it was Howard's Feed n' Wax.

The rim was textured with the Sorby micro spiraling tool. The bowl is about 13 inches in diameter at the rim and ~4 inches deep.

Really nice bowl Tony. The balance of grain on the inside is spot on and love the rim treatment. Love it!

Great work.  Extra special to have a piece of Osage Orange that big without any cracks and checks.

Beautiful wood, and the rim detail is very nice.  Just picked up the same tool, will have to give that a try.  Thanks for sharing!

I've had the larger sorby spiraling and texturing tool for several years now and have never created something as nice.  Was there much/any sanding to the rim afterwards???

Yes and no.  Grin

The rim was sanded before using the tool, but after using the tool I cut the bead and the decorations on each side of the bead. Because of a small splintering off in the sapwood area of the bowl, the decorations beside the spiraled area changed from beads to the coves(?) that you see. Those were sanded up to 400 grit after they were cut.

The harder the wood, the better the Sorby tool works. I have a larger tool as well (not Sorby but Crown) that I have not had the success with that I do with the Sorby.
