Nova G3 Bottle Stopper Chuck- insert suggestions?
Nov 11th, 2017 at 8:53pm

Hi all,

I am running a Nova G3 on my Shop Fox lathe and am looking for a Bottle Stopper Mount that I can use with the 4 Jaw chuck when mounting blanks?

Right ow I am using a expanding drill type Mandrel and I struggle with it at times with the Mandrel walking out. I've glued it but still has a tenancy to wobble out sometimes when trying to turn the end with the tail-stock pulled away. Being able to utilize the chuck since it's thread spun, will allow a much more secure turning piece?

Thoughts?
Comments.

Thanks for your help!!

I'm not quite sure what you're talking about.
"Typically" a bottle stopper mandrel is nothing more than a 3/8-16 thread that's driven by the headstock in someway.
Just guessing, but...
If you are trying to tighten a basic mandrel (metal rod) with a scroll chuck like your G3, it's gonna' vibrate loose. These chucks were designed to hold wood..
I would suggest that you turn a scrap piece of wood, drill a hole the size of your mandrel and then glue it into the wood.
Chuck holds wood, wood holds mandrel, mandrel holds stopper blank.

There are many other solutions, this was just a quick, easy suggestion.

Hey Sal, why don't you purchase one of the twist on stopper chuck? You will have to remove your Nova G3 to use it, but that shouldn't be much work. I don't find it to be a very big job to remove a chuck, and those screw on types of stopper chucks work fine.

The mandrel below will work in a #2MT or scroll chuck...

I turned mine from maple, threaded to fit spindle, drilled hole and glued in screw. Tuned end to diameter bottle. Read Ruth Niles about bottle stoppers.

One thing not mentioned is where the mandrel is being held.
Is it being held by the Jaw slides, the base of the jaws or by some type of pin jaw.

Sorry for the late response. Busy week. I have to make about 50 more stoppers for this craft show I'm in next week. Ugh.

But I think the threaded stopper mount is the best way for me to go.

I'm using a drill type chuck right now in my mandrel and it has a tendency to work it's way out of it at times. Even when I glue it in it still will somehow vibrate loose. The reason why I asked about the G3 was that is screwed down so no way it can walk out and get loose.

I'm totally fine until I pull the tail-stock away to finish the end of the stopper. That's when at times, it will wobble out no matter what speed I select. I know it's not the perfect setup but it works. I just have to bit my lip and struggle sometimes.

Attached were the stoppers I made a few weeks ago for a craft fair I was in last weekend. I used a slab from an oak tree, painted it black and drilled holes for the bottoms to insert. Trying to figure out a better display for this coming show to show them off better. Only have a few days though to make it  Embarrassed

Thanks all.

A photo of this setup would help us to understand

So Sal, does your Jacob's chuck not have a threaded tail, that you can connect a threaded rod through the head end, to anchor it in place?
