Tow of them re of an unknown wood that I got from an old boat wright's horde and the last one is spalted maple. The are all finished with friction finishes. the all measure about 9" high and 3.5" in diameter and have glass inserts.

Smiley Nicely done Nic, I like all three pieces. But that spalted Maple one is special, it's gorgeous!

Nic

You did a swell job on all three of them and they all three look like Maple.  What size is the glass insert?

Arlin,  I use the tall chimney glasses, that are normally used to serve adult beverages. I get them at the local Good Will type of stores. they are usually between $0.25 and $0.50 each. they are just about 3 inches in diameter. I use a large forstner bit with an extension to make the hole then scrape until the glass just fits the rim and leaves expansion room around the glass. Remember that wood moves so the hole must not be to tight or the wood will split. I finish the inside with a good quality marine varnish. That helps with the wood expansion due to temperature and moisture.

I'm confused.  Can you explain how a "good quality marine varnish . . . helps with the wood expansion due to temperature and moisture?"  Everything I've read says no finish stops moisture movement into and out of wood, and other than affecting relative humidity in the air I can't recall ever reading that temperature affects wood movement.
