George Guadiane's OATS method
Dec 3rd, 2017 at 12:10pm

I have used George Guadiane’s “OATS” staves on several turns.
My question, can this be done with more than 8 staves? If so what are the correct cut angles?

Certainly.
With 8 staves, you need you staves to have a combined angle (side A + side B) to equal 45 degrees. With a standard (equal angles) stave this would be  A 22.5 and B 22.5.
With the OATS method, (OATS = off angle triangle stave) it can be any combination as long as the angles add up to 45 degrees. (10 and 35, 20 and 25, etc.)

For a 12 segment vessel, the combined angle is 30 degrees and the same rules apply.
Standard (even angles) stave would b A 15 and B 15. OATS method, any combination that add up to 30.

Ed,
I am confused. could you provide me with a rough sketch of the indicators  "side A, side B, and the associated angles."

Thanks Nic

I'll post some photos today that should help you visualize what I'm trying to describe.

So here's what I did.
I made two "mock-ups" of segments out of some scrap plywood to help better understand segments and their angles.
The first one is a standard or basic segment as you're used to seeing. A segment with a combined 45 degree angle ,which consists of equal 22.5 degree angles on both sides A&B, which makes it perfect for an 8 sided ring
The second one is a skewed or "Off Angle" segment, still 45 degrees combined but with a 35 degree angle on side A and a 10 degree angle on side B.
This can be done with any number of segments as i described in my earlier post and any combination of angles as long as they add up 45 degrees in this example.
I placed them on a square to show that they are both indeed the same (combined) angle, 45 degrees. I also laid on on top of the other so that you could see the sides align.

Ed,
Thanks. Those photos are just what I needed to understand the process.
Thanks again.

Over the past couple of years I have been using the calculator found here Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register . If you use the shop tools you can find the multiple angle staves that cover the stave slope as well.
