New Shop help
Dec 21st, 2017 at 11:38am

Im finally going to get my own space and not have to roll everything out to the carport. Ive sold my boat so I get the shop its in. It is 18' X 28' and made of all metal. The problem is, the roof sweats sometimes and drips water on everything inside. Ive been covering my tools in the small space Ive been keeping them in, but now that I can use the whole shop thats going to be a pain. Is there a something I can do to the inside of the roof to keep it from sweating?
It is really tall, so insulation and sheet rock is most likely out.
The carport in front of the big door is where I have been rolling all my tools out to work.

I wanted to add another pic to show the inside. I originally framed the inside up to 8' and covered it with plywood, no insulation. Everything in the pic is gone except the big ladder and the rack with coolers in the back. Im hoping there is something I can do to the inside roof to keep it from sweating, it doesnt leak when it rains, just the sweating.

You need something to get the heat and humidity out of the building.

How's this:  a vent in the top of the wall at one end and a fan at the other end pulling the hot air out.

At a minumum, it will keep it cooler in there.

What about raising the framed walls upto the cross braces and putting in a ceiling at that height with insulation.  put a vent or 2 near the ridge and some vents just above the ceiling on the walls to cross ventilate the attic space.

I put vents near the top middle on each end today, will see if that helps. I do have the two fans in there, but Id hate to run them all the time. Im also thinking about putting some kind of floor sealant on the cement. I just need to do more research on that.

Spray foam. A little pricey, but no sweating, better temperature control, and some sound proofing. Not sure if it has to be covered with a fire retardant in a nonresidential application. I sprayed it on the Wife's dog training metal roof. What a difference.

Ken...For what it's worth.  A neighbor I once had installed a roof vent with a solar powered fan.  Good luck...

Thankfully this only happens around winter and we dont have much of one. The vents seemed to have helped as there were no sweat today, I will check it daily.

Now that I dont have to roll everything out, I will need to build cabinets, and come up with a solution for my turning tools. I'll be glad not to have them in a bucket anymore lol

for your turning tools, a shop tip i recently got from woodsmith is to use rubbermaid wire shelving. the wires are spaced 1" apart and you just hang your tools through. being open, no chips collect. plus you can store stuff right on the shelve or hang it from the front.

Looks like a nice shop setup, I can envision Bandsaw and Tablesaw on casters rolling out to to open air to use and maybe even an outside bench to sit on and figure out a project.

I really like that idea David, and I have a few of those shelves not being used.

Buck, everything I have has wheels and Im tired of moving it all under the carport to work. But I can see doing it later when the weather is nice.

Sounds good Ken, I enjoy use my small planer and contractor table saw in yard while not concerned of mess and a day or 2 or even 3 later running the bagged mower over chips for clean-up.

Ken:  It would seem likely the manufacturer would be asked this question a lot - you might check with them, or if out of business a manufacturer or similar metal outbuildings.
