Decisions on which side to be up
Dec 27th, 2017 at 5:09pm

This is a black walnut slab that is 16 x 7 inches.  I've been going back and forth on which side will be the bowl rim.  The slab 1 pix is the outside of the tree.  The pic slab 2 is the inside of the tree.  It doesn't show up very well in the photo but the circular area to the lower right of the dark spot is a depression that goes down 2 inches and the dark area on the left go down to about an inch from the other side.

Which side would you recommend to be the top of the bowl? Thanks

Bill

First that is some nice Walnut and it looks like Ambrosia Maple on the second picture.

Now how you turn it is the figure always goes to the bottom so it shows up in the bottom and sides of the bowl, however, I have turned it many ways just to see what it would look like and I have not ever been really disappointed.

So the way I see it now is the second picture would be the bottom.  Good luck on turning it and really looking forward to seeing it when it is done.  Smiley

It looks to me like Pic 2 is the bark side.  There is what looks like sapwood on both the right and left sides, and the depressions I've seen like yours were irregularities on the outside of the log.

If you want the largest possible diameter complete rim, Pic 2 will have to be the bottom, so you can turn away the depressions.  If you don't mind an incomplete rim then Pic 1 could be the bottom.

Beyond that I can't offer any input.

I'm not sure there is a right or wrong answer to your question.  If it was my piece of wood, picture number 1 would be the rim of the bowl, because that is my preference. The preferences of others may differ and that is fine.
