does anyone know how to sharpen these tools?
Jan 1st, 2018 at 5:06pm

I sure am having a problem sharpening these, i believe they are from david ellsworth, I have the straight one as shown. i bought a diamond hone and have tried to hold it flat on the bevel and sharpen from the heel up, also tried just polishing the top flat area, but neither seem to be giving me a good burr or sharp edge. Tried looking up different information on shaprpening these but not really finding much, if anyone has any info, please help, thanks.Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Laid 'upside down' on a diamond hone will touch them up.

Well, yes and no, they are super glued in. So instructions are to heat them with a torch for removal, sharpen and then re glue

Those look like the single point tooling we had in basic high school machine shop back in the 70’s. A local machinist would sharpen them for the class. Thinking back that guy was one heck of a good guy.
Is there any info on YouTube or from the manufacturer?

Those look like Ellsworth hollowing tools. His recommendation is to dress a radius on the corner of your grinding wheel and sharpen it by holding it at the correct angle and moving back and forth around the corner. This is why some CBN wheels have a radius on the edge.

Yes they are, and I will try that and actually that answers my question on whether to get cnnespanol wheels with radius or not, thanks.

At the 2 minute mark of this video  you can see John Lucas sharpen these without removing from the shaft

There are these available.  Helps hold onto the bit for safety.  I made one from a block of oak, then threaded a hole for a bolt to hold the bit..

Bill

That was the exact same one I was going to recommend if Rod takes them out.

Also thanks to Tony for the info on why the CBNs had the radius on them.
