New tool and not sure how to use it-need some help
Jan 9th, 2018 at 9:37am

I got a new set of wood turning tools for Christmas and this came with the set. I played with it for a while but got bad results which means I was probably using it wrong.
It's small, about 1/4 inch in diameter, and shaped with a cup. Can anyone tell me what this would be used for and the best way to present it to the wood (above center, below, even).

you might consider it an extremely sharp scraper. I use it to finish the inside of a bowl. You rotate the tip a bit and run it with the side acting as the bevel. It makes extremely fine shavings if held correctly. When one edge gets dull just losen the screw and turn the cup for a new edge. Good tool but if you try to hog the wood it will usually catch with a deep dent.

This "looks" like a Hunter style tool.
The Hunter website has videos on the usage.

Could it be the new Binford Gougemaster 2000?

To start out with it, have the cutting edge on center. after you get better with it you can go below center for a clean up cut.
