Haven't yet mastered how the radii should be graduated, but I've been using three thick wide scrapers for the bottom and starting up transitions with different radii.  Picked up the idea from Richard Raffan's book & video combination on bowls.

Just joining this thread and first time on this site in quite a while. You mentioned watching some youtube on turning, I personally enjoy watching Bob Hamilton explain the different aspects of turning on Youtube, Here is the link, Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register He is so easy to listen to and down to earth in his presentation, Bob has passed on but his videos live on.
