Spindle height?
Feb 18th, 2018 at 10:09pm

Ive had my 3520 now for 5 years, Im now starting to think the spindle height is taller than I like. Yeah I know, just like Jimmy Johns, what took you so long. Where is your spindle height compared to your height. Im 58, from what Ive read it should be at elbow height. My elbow is at about 42 and the lathe is at 45. Its worked well at this height I just wonder if it would be more comfortable at a lower height.

Throw down some mat on the floor and see if it's better?

My large lathe is a lot above elbow height, and it works just fine (and if I have 8" of wood chips on the floor, I can still use the lathe!).

If it's comfortable for you, it's the right height.

My spindle height is above elbow height, and I prefer it that way. If you have any aches or pains, most of the time they are due to bad posture, remember to stand up straight..... If you have to bend over or reach up, that can cause the aches and pains, so then time to adjust the height. If you have a raised platform to stand on, make sure it is big enough so that you don't risk stepping off the edge. I am 6 foot tall (okay, 5 11 1/2 after getting hips and a knee replaced...). My 3520A was up on a 4 by 4...

What Reed said plus, elbow height is only a rough starting point not a hard and fast rule. Your body should tell you when it's unhappy.
