What's your favorite sealant for turning blanks
Feb 25th, 2018 at 6:32pm

Ok, it looks like I need a bunch of sealant, probably a couple of gallons. The wood I have isn't green, looks very dry, and it sat outside for about year or two.

What's your favorite.

I have no experience with Anchorseal (AS) I, but I have perhaps in one log out of 50 seen end cracks form after sealing with AS II.  Perhaps those wouldn't have cracked with AS I, perhaps they would have, but I have no reason to say AS II is junk.  I've been slammed before for saying this because I didn't have comparative experience with AS I, so take my experience with that in mind as you decide which product to try.  Of course I have had the opportunity to mail order AS I, but as a small business I minimize making mail orders, especially to warehouse-only sites.  I buy AS II from a local Woodcraft store to support a local business and their employees.  My understanding is that AS I uses wax derived from petroleum while AS II uses a wax derived from plants, a renewable source.  That may or may not be relevant to you, it is important to me.

Don, your post is correct IMO
Unless there is a side by side comparison all the rumblings you hear is just noise.
I linked to the UC Coatings page for that exact reason, so that people could look for themselves to see which they prefer.
Many people seemed to get angry when they didn't know that the original was still available (some still don't) and were forced to by AS 2. Much of the reason is because the local stores only carried the newer product as you mentioned. Some people seem to think that the original is better because it seems to have a thicker viscosity. Whatever the reason, AS 2 has gotten a bad rap that isn't warranted IMO.
I have used both and have not seen any change in performance between the two, That's just my observation.

Would'nt something like Exterior latex paint or concrete sealer do just as good at a much cheaper price? Just trying to find out for my own future use. I haven't tried to use any green wood yet.

Don't feel you have to get anchorseal, because you don't.  Other things will work.  You may find latex paint used but that did not work for me.  Hot melted wax works great.  I saw a recent you tube where he used woodturners glue.  It is generally cheaper than Anchor seal since you can buy it locally and don't pay freight.  You can wrap the ends with shrink wrap.  Just some other things to consider........ A last thought, you only need to coat/wrap the end grain not the whole blank.    Have fun

I tried latex paint once and I ended up with painted cracks.

Many other products like concrete sealer may not adhere properly with wood.
Wood glue (watered down) may be absorbed more deeply into the pores. Since PVA wood glues work by interacting with the cellulose in the wood, this area will be needed to be cut away. This goes for all other products that are absorbed to deeply, you need to allow for this amount of waste.

Melted Paraffin wax does work well but obviously you need to heat a large enough vessel to accommodate your blanks. This is a good process for doing large batches but not really practical for occasional use.

I use anchor Seal because it was designed for the job and it works.
You use what works best for you

Even if I double coat, a little Anchorseal 2 goes a long long way.  And it doesn't develop a surface film like paint after being opened.  In fact, I've never had to throw out any no matter how long its been on hand, but I do keep tightly sealed between uses.

Thanks for all your help.

I called the homeowner who cut this down, we're looking at about 8 to 10 months.

At this point, i'm looking for the classic AS, if I can't find that I go with the AS2.

Correction, I think i'll be going with the original Titebond for my sealant. Approx $20 gallon.

Just a word of caution,
Wood sealers like Anchor-Seal are designed to slow the moisture transfer from the wood to the atmosphere. Wood Glue is Designed to adhere wood together and may not have the same properties as a dedicated sealer.
If you seal wood too well, 1. it may never dry, 2. you can get mold growth.

From The Titbond site,
"Can high moisture wood be glued?

Moisture levels above 10% can slow the drying of water based wood glues such as Titebond Original, II and III to the point where, wood above 16% moisture content, may not dry at all."

This may be something to consider depending on the MC of the wood when sealed

Grounding:  Whatever you use, it will not work 100% of the time and may require multiple applications.  YRMV

I have used anchor seal and I have also wrapped wood in plastic. In both cases I have had it work, and also fail.

Plastic seems to promote mold, anchor seal not.  I find that anchor seal works 95% of the time if you apply at least two coats (the second can be difficult to apply well because anchor seal does not like being applied over itself).

I think any method can work for you, you just need to keep notes on the type of wood, and what works in your area and conditions.

I will keep using anchor seal for most of my things because the other methods cause mold or are not any less expensive.

Good luck  Thumbs Up

To Tom's point,
IMO sealing lumber is not the place to 'experiment"  or try and save money. One or two failed pieces and you would have easily paid the full price for Anchor-Seal.
There are other products that are similar, Bailey's, and Waxlor come to mind.
I have also heard that some turning clubs have members chip in for a large quantity like a 55 gallon drum and it brings the price way down, in the neighborhood of $12 per gallon.

I use melted paraffin. It is the best I have available here in Cayman.  It works fine.

I also use hot paraffin.  I use an old single burner camp stove to heat up the paraffin in a large stew pot pan that I got from DAV.  The pot is large enough that I can dip some things in it or I use a paint brush to brush it on the end.  (Most of my wood comes from logs that I get.)  I make sure that the wax is hot enough that when it dries it is clear.  That way it does get down in the pores of the wood.

Can't remember, is there a fire risk if heating paraffin over an open flame?  Or if melted paraffin is dripped on a hot heating element?  I imagine lots of people melt paraffin on a kitchen stove to make candles.

Don, once it gets good and hot, I turn the burner off and move the pot away from the stove.  If it needs to be heated up again, I just relight the stove and put the pot back on.  It would be too easily tipped over if it were left on the stove.

Most use a double boiler to melt wax for hobbies. For large melt like we would use, would adding a solvent like mineral spirits help to spread it out?

Glen, I don't know that it would help, but it might make it a little more volatile.

This has been very helpful, thank you.

So I haven't had time to head out and grab sealant yet.

I found paraffin here locally at $3.99 lb, I can grab a qt of AS, and I have some titebond in the shop.

So, it looks like I'll be trying the three:
Anchorseal, paraffin and titebond.

I have used Anchor Seal now for 7 years.  I used to heat up paraffin wax and hated the stink and well mostly my wife did so I went to Anchor Seal and really like it.

I didn't realize how quickly wood checks and splits. I was able to salvage a few prime pieces, including burls. Used the paraffin method, so we'll see. The rest will be firewood.

Brett, yes it does start to crack and split very quickly. Don’t forget some of those cracks can be filled effectively so that it can safely turned into a finished product.
